Types and Shadows

Heb. 8:5  Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, [that] thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

5262. hupodeigma a figure, copy, example

Definition: (a) a figure, copy, (b) an example, model.

4639. skia shadow

Definition: a shadow, shade, thick darkness, an outline.

Heb. 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, [and] not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

Hebrews 9:23 [It was] therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

Types, Copes, Shadows and Examples are all neat ways to look at the Word of God.

Type = to classify by kind/class or group/a category

Copy = reproduction which bears a close resemblance to the original

          Shadow = A reflection

Example = a demonstration with the aim of informing others of how a task should be performed.

We need to be careful when making Types and Shadows. Some types and shadows are given in the Word. Jonah and the great fish for three days is a type of Jesus in the grave for three days. Adam is spoken of as a type of Jesus in Romans 5:14. In Galatians 4 Abraham’s two sons one by bond-maid and one by free-woman are give as an allegory; a type.

(Heb 10:19, 20 KJV) Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

(Mat 27:50, 51 KJV) Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

A type is a way of looking at one thing and getting some understanding of something different but in some way alike. When we look at the tabernacle and make a type; a picture of Jesus or something else it may be correct or wrong. What I mean by that is a type is picture that some one made up, if it is not specified that way in the Word, you have no precedent for it, to make it so. With that said it may be a good picture, parallel, and a good allegory to help you see a truth in the Word. Remember that it is only a type; a picture, and hopefully it is a good one that can give you some insight into the holiness of God and our walk and fellowship with Him. Types that are not specified in the Word of God that some one made up to convey a spiritual lesson are not the interpretation.

The tabernacle of Moses in wilderness is a copy of the true tabernacle in heaven, it is only a shadow; a reflection of the true one. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:11 that the things that happened to the Israelite s are give for an example to us. And we read in Colossians and in Hebrews that the Holy days, Sabbaths, and Sacrifices are shadows; just a reflection of the true. That means they are a picture of the true, they are not the real article. This does give us some precedent to yous types in teaching a spiritual lesson but remember a type is not an interpretation it is more an illustration.

Col. 2:16, 17 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath [days]: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body [is] of Christ.

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Now let’s take a look at some Types and Shadows from the Tabernacle of Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai. God gave Moses exact instructions on how to make the tabernacle.

Heb. 8:5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, [that] thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

The Tabernacle

The purpose of the Tabernacle was to house the Ark in which the tablets of the Ten Commandments were placed. The Ark was a 2 ½ x 1½ cubit rectangular wooden chest with its lid being the Mercy Seat with the Cherubim of glory facing one another with wings outstretched. The blood was sprinkled between the judgment angels who were looking down and when they would see the blood the wrath of God was stayed.

The Ark of the Covenant

The ark was a rectangular wooden chest made of shittim wood overlaid with pure gold inside and outside. 2 1/2 cubits long by 1 1/2 cubits wide and high (3 3/4 feet x 2 1/4 feet) it had a gold crown around the top.

It is a hard wood resistant enough to heat and decay that it has been described as indestructible.

Typifies the incorruptible body of Jesus

Exo 25:10, 11 And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about.

The Ark completely overlaid with gold within and without reminds us that Jesus retained full deity in union with His humanity.

  Wood typifies His humanity

  Gold typifies His deity

The crown of gold upon the Ark foreshadows the man Christ Jesus, promoted and exalted as King of Kings and Lord of Lords

The Ark of the Covenant was where God's justice and judgement toward sin was satisfied. It is referred to almost 200 times in the Old Testament.

The Contents and their Symbolism

  The Tablets of Stone

  The Golden Pot of Manna

  Aaron’s Rod that budded

Exo 25:16 And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee.

The Ten Commandments engraved in stone, represent God’s law

They were kept in the Ark

So God’s Law was fully KEPT observed by Jesus

Exo 16:32, 33 And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commandeth, Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt. And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your generations.

The Golden Pot of Manna typifies Jesus as the Bread of Life

John 6:32, 33 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

John 6:48 I am that bread of life.

Num 17:8 And it came to pass, that on the morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds.

Num 17:10  And the LORD said unto Moses, Bring Aaron's rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not.

Aaron’s Rod that budded typifies the Resurrection – Life out of death

          Jesus rose from the dead

John 14:19b Because I live, ye shall live also

The Mercy Seat

The word for "mercy seat" is the same root for the word "atonement". It means to cover, cancel, appease, or cleanse. The Mercy Seat was where the blood was sprinkled. The Mercy Seat was the lid or cover of solid gold on the ark.

The ark emphasized the Person of Jesus

The Mercy Seat emphasized the Purpose of Jesus

The Mercy Seat was a plate of pure gold

Nothing but Deity could offer saving mercy

The Mercy Seat is where God met with Moses

Exo 25:22 And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

When God revealed the pattern of the tabernacle and the way to approach Him He also declared exactly where He would meet Moses:

In the New Testament this Mercy Seat or atonement cover is spoken of twice.

Heb 9:2-5 "For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary; and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle, which is, called the Holiest of All, which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant; and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail."

Rom 3:23-26 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus."

The Greek word for Mercy Seat is 'hilasterion'. It is used here in Romans 3:25 where Paul says (literally) that God presented Christ as a propitiation or 'mercy seat'. This means that Jesus Christ is the mercy seat.

G2435 hilaste¯rion hil-as-tay'-ree-on Neuter of a derivative of G2433; an expiatory (place or thing), that is, (concretely) an atoning victim, or (specifically) the lid of the Ark (in the Temple): - mercyseat, propitiation.

The Cherubim

    Angels are ministering spirits

   Cherubim are considered as
                guardians of God’s holiness

Exo 37:6, 7 And he made the mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half was the length thereof, and one cubit and a half the breadth thereof. And he made two cherubims of gold, beaten out of one piece made he them, on the two ends of the mercy seat;

Exo 37:8, 9 One cherub on the end on this side, and another cherub on the other end on that side: out of the mercy seat made he the cherubims on the two ends thereof. And the cherubims spread out their wings on high, and covered with their wings over the mercy seat, with their faces one to another; even to the mercy seatward were the faces of the cherubims.

The Table for the Shew-bread

The Table made of wood represented Jesus in the flesh.

Completely overlaid with pure gold reminds us of His continuing deity.

Exo 25:23-25 Thou shalt also make a table of shittim wood: two cubits shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, and make thereto a crown of gold round about. And thou shalt make unto it a border of an hand breadth round about, and thou shalt make a golden crown to the border thereof round about.

Upon the table were twelve unleavened cakes, representing, the twelve tribes of Israel. The cakes were made from fine flour, arranged into two stacks of six. Shewbread in Hebrew can also be translated as "bread of faces, or bread of the presence".

The Shewbread

Showbread = bread of face

  Type of Christ
  The Bread of God
Nourishment for Believers the priesthood   Bread is a type of the word

Exo 25:30 And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway.

Lev 24:5, 6 And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals shall be in one cake. And thou shalt set them in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the LORD.

The shewbread was baked without leaven. The priest and their sons were to eat the shewbread every Sabbath when they came to put oil in the Lamp Stand. The priests removed the 12 cakes of shewbrad from the table and replaced them with fresh ones.

The Golden Lamp-stand

The Lampstand and its branches typify Jesus and His Church.

Exo 25:31 And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same.

  Jesus is the True Light

  Believers are Light

The Lamp Stand was the only light in the Holy Place. The lamp stand was made of pure gold. It was one piece of beaten gold. It had seven branches coming off of one stem.

John 1:8, 9 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Zec 4:2, 3 And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.

Zec 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

Oil typifying the Holy Spirit

This was pure olive oil obtained by beating

Does the Holy Spirit ever suffering? YES

            Grieved

            Quenched

            Vexed

Exo 27:20 And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always.

Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption

1Th 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.

Isa 63:10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

The Incense Altar

Exo 30:1- 4 And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt thou make it. A cubit shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof; foursquare shall it be: and two cubits shall be the height thereof: the horns thereof shall be of the same. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, the top thereof, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns thereof; and thou shalt make unto it a crown of gold round about. And two golden rings shalt thou make to it under the crown of it, by the two corners thereof, upon the two sides of it shalt thou make it; and they shall be for places for the staves to bear it withal

  Horns symbolize power of prayer

Exo 30:7, 8 And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it. And when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations.

The Veil

Once a year the High Priest went behind the vail in the Holiest of Holies to communicate with God.

  The Veil
       Exodus 26:31-35

  The Veil typify Jesus flesh

  Death on the cross

The veil acted as a partition between the two rooms inside the tabernacle - the holy of holies, where the ark was to be placed, and the holy place, where the rest of the furniture sat.

Exo 26:31 And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made:

The priests would enter the holy place daily to maintain the lamp and weekly to change out the showbread.

But they were never allowed behind the veil.

Only the High Priest was permitted behind the veil, and he could only enter once a year, on the Day of Atonement.

(Heb 10:19, 20 KJV) Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

(Mat 27:50, 51 KJV) Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

The Tabernacle Curtains

The Tabernacle

Exodus 26:1-6

This curtain symbolizes the righteousness which Jesus wrought for us by His earthly ministry.

Exo 26:1 Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet: with cherubims of cunning work shalt thou make them.

The tabernacle would be constructed with layers of materials: two curtains and two coverings.

The first, inside layer would be visible only from the inside of the tabernacle.

This inner layer was made of ten curtains that were fine linen with blue, purple, and scarlet material.

There were to be images of cherubim embroidered or woven into these curtains.

This curtain symbolizes the righteousness which Jesus wrought for us by His earthly ministry.

Fine linen

          typifies personal righteousness

typifies the sinless life of Christ

Blue

The Tent Curtains

The Tent Curtains Exodus 26:7-13

The next layer of curtains were eleven curtains made of goats' hair. With larger measurements, these curtains completely cover the fine linen curtain. No one could see inside unless they entered in through the single door.

Exo 26:7 And thou shalt make curtains of goats' hair to be a covering upon the tabernacle: eleven curtains shalt thou make.

Speaking of Christ in Atonement

Goats’ Hair Curtain

Typifies the sin of man human failure and confusion

Typifies Christ as our sin offering

The Coverings for the Tent

The Coverings for Tent Exodus 26:14

Now there are two coverings for the tabernacle, possibly only for the roof.

The inner, bottom covering was to be rams' skins dyed red.

Rams’ skins denote Christ, our Suffering High Priest

Exo 26:14 And thou shalt make a covering for the tent of rams' skins dyed red, and a covering above of badgers' skins.
