The Doctrine of Christ

Over and over in the bible we are told to abide in the doctrine, teaching of Jesus. Jesus said to go into the entire world and teach them, to observe all things that he taught to be obedient to his teachings, his words.

(2 John 1:5 – 10) And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

(2 John 1:9 KJV) Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

transgresseth = to go contrary to, i.e. violate a command

abideth not in = to stay

doctrine = instruction

We can see this is very important

You have to abide in the teaching of Christ, his doctrine. To transgress that is to violate, not keep his teaching, to not do what Jesus said is to NOT have God the Father or Jesus the Son, if you do not have Jesus you’re NOT SAVED.

What is the doctrine of Christ?

(Heb 6:1, 2 KJV) Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

Leaving here does not imply doing away or ceasing to believe them but moving on from these elementary principles. These truths are the foundation of the teaching of Jesus. Like a wise builder who lays the foundation, then he or others builds the house on top of the foundation.

(1 Cor 3:10-12 NLT) Because of God's special favor to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. For no one can lay any other foundation than the one we already have--Jesus Christ. Now anyone who builds on that foundation may use gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw.

We are the house that is being built; we are the temple of God. Preachers and teachers are the laborers. Their messages are how they build the house; their messages are ether gold, silver, jewels {precious stones}, wood, hay, or straw {stubble}.

The doctrine of Christ

· Repentance from dead works

· Faith toward God

· Doctrine of baptisms

· Laying on of hands

· Resurrection of the dead

· Eternal judgment

Repentance from dead works

Repent = reformation; by implication reversal

(Mat 4:17 KJV) From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

(Mark 1:15 KJV) And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent, and believe the gospel.

(Acts 2:38 KJV) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

(Acts 26:20 KJV) But showed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

The message is repent from sin to God and do works that show your repentance.

Faith toward God

(Mark 11:22, 23 KJV) And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

(Mat 9:29 KJV) Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

(Luke 8:48 KJV) And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

(1 Cor 2:5 KJV) That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

(2 Cor 5:7 KJV) (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

Doctrine of baptisms

Here we see it is not say baptism, but baptisms, more than one baptism.

(Mat 20:22 KJV) But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.

Here we have a baptism of suffering

(Mark 1:4 KJV) John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

(Mark 16:16 KJV) He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Here we have water baptism

(Mark 1:8 KJV) I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

(Acts 2:4 KJV) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Here we the baptism in the Holy Ghost

Laying on of hands

(Mat 8:3 KJV) And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

(Mark 16:17, 18 KJV) And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

(Acts 14:3 KJV) Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

(James 5:14 KJV) Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

Jesus lay hands on the sick and they where healed and said that they that believe in him would do the same.

Resurrection of the dead

(John 5:29 KJV) And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

(1 Th 4:16 KJV) For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Jesus taught two resurrections one unto life and one unto damnation.

Eternal judgment

(Mat 5:21 KJV) Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

(Mat 12:36 KJV) But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

(2 Cor 5:10 KJV) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

(2 Pet 2:9 KJV) The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

Jesus taught that there is a day of judgment, for the things we do and say.

The Sermon on the Mount

Blessed are

poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

the meek: they shall inherit the earth.

they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: they shall be filled.

the merciful: they shall obtain mercy.

the pure in heart: they shall see God.

the peacemakers: they shall be called the children of God.

they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Establish the law

(Mat 5:11 - 12 KJV) Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

(Mat 5:17 - 19 KJV) Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

(Rom 3:31 KJV) Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Be ye angry, and sin not

(Mat 5:22 - 25 KJV) But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

(Eph 4:26 - 27 KJV) Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.

Overcome evil with good

(Mat 5:38 - 39 KJV) Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

(Mat 5:44 KJV) But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

(Rom 12:17 – 21 KJV) Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

Before men, to be seen of them

(Mat 6:1 – 3 KJV) Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them:thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not :

(Mat 6:5 KJV) And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

(Isa 29:13 KJV) Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

Forgive men their trespasses

(Mat 6:14 -15 KJV) For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(Eph 4:32 KJV) And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

(James 2:13 KJV) For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath showed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also

(Mat 6:19 - 21 KJV) Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

(1 Tim 6:8 - 11 KJV) And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

(James 5:1 - 3 KJV) Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

(Mat 6:34 KJV) Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

What judgment ye judge

(Mat 7:1 - 2 KJV) Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

(James 4:11- 12 KJV) Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

(Rom 2:1 KJV) Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

False prophets in sheep's clothing

(Mat 7:15 - 16 KJV) Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

(2 Cor 11:13 - 15 KJV) For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

The doers of the law

(Mat 7:21 - 24 KJV) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

(Rom 2:13 KJV) (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

(Titus 1:16 KJV) They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

(James 1:22 KJV) But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Deny him, he also will deny us

(Mat 10:32 - 33 KJV) Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

(2 Tim 2:12 KJV) If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
