Righty Dividing the Word of Truth

In this teaching we will be looking at some concepts on interpreting the word of God, and judging what you hear about the Word of God.

2Ti 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

All scripture is given

  By God
  A     Is profitable     “helpful; advantageous”
  B
Doctrine     ” In a general sense, whatever is taught”
C    Reproof     “Blame expressed to the face”
D     Correction     “The act of correcting; the act of bringing back, from error or deviation”
E    Instruction     “To teach; to inform the mind; to educate; to impart knowledge”

2Ti 3:17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2Ti 2:15   Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

A    Study     “Literally, a setting of the mind or thoughts upon a subject;”
  B
Approved     “To like; to be pleased with; acceptable”
  C
Workman     “Any man employed in labor, whether in tillage or manufactures.”

A workman that needeth not to be ashamed - A man faithfully performing his duty, so that when he looks over what he has done, he may not blush.

  a)   Rightly     dividing     "cutting straight"

Rightly dividing the word of truth - We need to interpret the word rightly being careful not to pull verses out of context.

  b)   Word of truth    “Conformity to fact or reality”

In 2 Peter we see

2Pe 3:15b … as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

2Pe 3:16   As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

2Pe 3:17  Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

According to the wisdom given unto him

2Pe 3:16

  KJV     NKJV     GW

As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.

He talks about this subject in all his letters. Some things in his letters are hard to understand. Ignorant people and people who aren't sure of what they believe distort what Paul says in his letters the same way they distort the rest of the Scriptures. These people will be destroyed.

Wrest the word of God; distort it from its true meaning.

We must be careful to interpret the Scriptures in the light of the entire Word of God and not to wrest the Scriptures, or twist passages out of context, perverting the Scripture to say what it does not really mean.

2Co 2:17   For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

Study to show thyself approved unto God

2Ti 2:15   Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

We are to be a student of the word and to study the Word of God, that we might be approved before God.

So what is truth?

Jesus Said

Joh 8:31   Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

Disciple   =   A follower; an adherent to the doctrines “teachings” of another.

Joh 8:32   And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. So the word is truth, we need the pure word.
  a)   know the truth
  b)   make you free

1Pe 2:2   As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

Sincere   =   undeceitful, that is, (figuratively) unadulterated:

How do we interpret the word rightly?

Comparing spiritual things with spiritual

1Co 2:12   Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

1Co 2:13   Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

Isa 28:9, 10   Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

What is spiritual?

Rom 7:14   For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin

1Co 9:11   If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

The Word is Spiritual, the Scriptures
Comparing Scripture with Scripture

Two or three witness

Deu 19:15b . . .   at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

Mat 18:16   But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

1Jn 5:7   For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

1Jn 5:8   And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

1Co 14:29   Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

2Co 13:1,2   This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established. I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare:

We need at least two or three witness in the word, on a teaching to establish it.

The witness cannot contradict other scriptures.

Make sure they are not false witness that is you have more witness that disagree with the teaching or the interpretation of the scriptures.

Always pay close attention to the context of the passage, for context is very important.

If a scripture verse is taken out of context it can be made to say almost anything.

Normally the plain sense is the main sense, don’t go beyond the word and look for a deeper meaning.

Precious from the vile

Jer 15:19   Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.

We need to separate what is precious, the pure word of God from that which is vile, that is twisted, pulled out of context.

The Holy Spirit will guide you

Joh 16:12,13   I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

1Co 2:12   Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God

No prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation

2Pe 1:20   Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

2Pe 1:21   For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

2Pe 2:1   But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

2Pe 2:2   And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

2Pe 2:3   And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

The Mirror of the Word

We need the word, God’s mirror.

James 1:22 - 24   But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

1Co 13:12   For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

2Co 3:17, 18   Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

"The Handbook of Bible Application” In the gospel, we see the truth about Christ, and it transforms us morally as we understand and apply it.

“Holman Bible Handbook” James equally compared the Word to a mirror that reflects our “input” of faith. He pictured God’s Word as a mirror that clearly reflected the condition of the one who looked into it.

“Willmington’s Guide to the Bible” Symbols for the Bible
      a.   A mirror   (Jas. 1:23-25).

I beseech you

1Co 1:10   Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Heb 5:12   For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

Heb 5:13   For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

Heb 5:14   But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Searched the scriptures

Act 17:10   And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

Act 17:11   These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Whether those things were so
