Works of the Law

We are saved by grace not works. In this study we will look at how the word work is you’d in the bible.  Is all works the same? Are there different kinds of works?

(Eph 2:8 KJV )  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

(Eph 2:9 KJV )  Not of works, lest any man should boast.

(Eph 2:10 KJV )  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

We can see that we are saved by grace, by God's influence upon our hearts, through faith, you believed in Jesus, as your savor not of yourselves, God prompts you, you responded. It is the gift of God; the word gift here is sacrifice, in Heb 9:26 Jesus appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. Not of works, We cannot, by our best works, merit pardon of sin. Being reconciled to God, we are to walk in good works.

(Acts 16:31 KJV )  And they said, Believe “to have faith “ on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Jesus' atoning sacrifice is the only thing that can take away sins.

(Rom 3:20 KJV )  Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

The law = It provides a mirror to reveal our sin.

Heb 10:1 a  For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things,

Jesus is the true image

Salvation =  It is a personal decision; you either accept the Lord Jesus or you reject Him. You have to believe and receive the Lord Jesus Christ personally. The Lord will not force you to receive Him. It is your choice.

(John 3:17 - 18 KJV )  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Not of works, not of what works?

We are called to do good works.

Works of the law

(Rom 9:32 KJV )  Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;

We read in Ephesians

(Eph 2:15 KJV )  Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

We see Jesus abolished the law of commandments contained in ordinances.

So what is rendered idle?

(Mat 5:17 KJV )  Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

(Rom 3:31 KJV )  Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

The word abolished in Eph 2:15 and void in Rom 3:31 are the same word   2673. katargeo, kat-arg-eh'-o;    to be (render) entirely idle (useless)

.

(Eph 2:15 KJV )  Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;.

(Rom 3:31 KJV )
Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

.

Having abolished =the law of commandments

Have not void = the law

.

These two verses contradict each other if you are taking the law as a whole. The law is broken up into three parts the civil, moral and the ordinances.  The ordinances are rendered idle, the works of the law is doing the ordinances to be holy or right with God. Works of Law are ordains, rituals, “ways of serves” “worship” that showed you to be separate and or Point tied to Jesus.

( Col 2:13 - 17 KJV )  And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;  And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:  Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

(Heb 9:8 - 10 KJV )  The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

( Col 2:20 - 23 KJV )  Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

How then is the Law, used to day?

We have seen in Rom 3:20 b  for by the law is the knowledge of sin

(1 Tim 1:7 - 9 KJV )  Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

(Rom 7:10 - 12 KJV )  And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

(Rom 8:1 KJV )  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

condemnation  = WD =strong censure; disapprobation, declare guilty

(Gal 3:24 KJV )  Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

The law is good and holy, it is to show us when we are in error “sin”, disobedience. When you do wrong, walk in the flesh and not the spirit, your conscience convicts you brings condemnation to instruct you as a schoolmaster, back to the right way “JESUS”.   A good conscience will convict you of sin, a conscience can be seared by not following it guidance, a conscience can bring self condemnation because of wrong teaching, belief.

(Rom 9:1 KJV )  I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,

(1 Tim 1:19 KJV )  Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

(1 Tim 4:2 KJV )  Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

(1 Pet 1:14 KJV )  As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

created in Christ Jesus unto good works

We need to be careful not to confuse seeking to be righteous, in our walk with the Lord, that is trying to walk in the Spirit, with works of the law. We are called to do good works, walk in the Spirit, bring forth fruits meet for repentance. Don’t trust in you good works though to save you, good works are need and they show who you are, a child of God.      Heb 12:14   Without holiness, no one will see God.....

(Mat 3:8 KJV )  Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

(Gal 5:18 KJV )  But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

(Gal 2:17 - 18 KJV )  But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

(Gal 5:25 KJV )  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

(James 1:27 KJV )  Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

 ·         Faith believes what God said.  “obeys, to righteousness”   brings fruit “the fruit of the spirit”

·         Disobedience brings fruit of flesh “sin”

 ·         Works of Law doing religious, things for wrong resins “the heart attitude”

 ·         Works and Faith can look alike on the outside.

 ·         Works of Law are ordains, rituals, “ways of serves” “worship”

Why are you doing what you are doing?
