The Good Samaritan

Luke 10:25 -37   One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: "Teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life?"     Jesus replied, "What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?"   The man answered, "'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.' And, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
  "Right!" Jesus told him. "
Do this and you will live!"   The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"   Jesus replied with an illustration: "A Jewish man was traveling on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes and money, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.    "By chance a Jewish priest came along; but when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.    A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.   "Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt deep pity.   Kneeling beside him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with medicine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next day he handed the innkeeper two pieces of silver and told him to take care of the man. 'If his bill runs higher than that,' he said, 'I'll pay the difference the next time I am here.'   "Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?" Jesus asked.   The man replied, "The one who showed him mercy." Then Jesus said, "Yes, now go and do the same."

The Parable of the Good Samaritan has two main messages, excuses and justification. This parable shows religious people with excuses for why they dint help some buddy in need and how we look for a lop hole so we do not have to help. When this lawyer an expert in religious law asked Jesus how to have eternal life Jesus replied, "What does the law of Moses say? The lawyer quoted Deuteronmy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18, Jesus compliments him on his answer: "You have answered correctly,"

*

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind"; and, "Love your neighbor as yourself,"

*

Jesus said if you keep the law the commandments of God you shall live. But the problem comes from self righteousness we try to justify our selfs. We like to pick and chose what commandments we will keep, we have a few pet laws, doctrines and we love only a few select people.

*

Jesus said, to go and do like the Good Samaritan did, show mercy to others. We as children of God, the disciples of Jesus are to follow the Samaritans example in our life and in our conduct. We are to show compassion and love for those we encounter in our everyday activities and there by fulfill the law.

Fulfilling the spirit of the Law

The Good Samaritan is a famous New Testament parable appearing only in the Gospel of Luke (10:25-37). The parable is told by Jesus to illustrate that compassion should be for all people, and that fulfilling the spirit of the Law is just as important as fulfilling the letter of the Law. Jesus puts the definition of neighbor into an enlarged context, beyond what people usually thought of as a neighbor.

The Gospel does not take away the law or replace the law.

*

Rom 1:16-18  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

*

The Gospel reveals righteousness, brings faith and does not take away from the law but establishes; completes, does the law.

*

Rom 13:9, 10  For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.  Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

*

Love is the completion of the law, love meets the requirements of the Law. If you truly love others you will keep the law, all the requirements of justice will be met.

*

Exo 20:2-6  I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.  Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:  Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

*

If you are a believer God has brought you out of the land of Egypt; the world, you where in the house of bondage, but now are delivered. Now it is your responsibility to love the LORD thy God with all thin heart and soul and have no other gods before God, "For there is no respect of persons with God." Rom 2:11

*

Rom 2:12-15  For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;  (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.  For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:   Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

*

Mark 12:30, 31    And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.   And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

John 3:14, 15    And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:    That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

 *

We see that those that believe have faith in Jesus "should not perish, but have eternal life" Note that SHOULD NOT.

WD = Should = (used to express condition): Were he to arrive, I should be please

WD = not =    word expressing denial/negation or refusal etc

*

GD = Should not = G3361
A primary particle of qualified negation (whereas G3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverbially) not, (conjugationally) lest; also (as interrogitive implying a negative answer [whereas G3756 expects an affirmative one]); whether:

*

OK we look at John 3:15 normally as a guarantee of believing in Jesus and have eternal life now already. But the verse is comparing two things perish / eternal life. We see from the Websters Dictionary that should is a condition and from the Greek that there is another word for affirmative and another word for absolute denial. Jesus used this same Greek word G3361 that the people should not make him known: Mat 12:16 even thou Jesus told some not to make him known some did make him known. If we put this in modern day Sentences we can see how it works.

Hear is a little example to show how this works.
There are a number of common ‘human’ foods that your dogs and cat should NOT EAT they are poisons to them.

Dogs should not eat human foodsbut have dog foods.

Now that we understand this verse we can understand that Faith involves more than just believing in Jesus. If it was faith only then demons would be saved for it says in James 2:19 "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble"

 *

Jesus teaches us that it takes more than faith alone to pleases Him.

*
So what makes the difference?

*

James 2:17, 18   Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.   Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.

*

Mat 7:21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

*

Mat 7:24a  Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them,

*

Faith involves works of obedience, hearing the sayings of Jesus and doing them. We need to receive the word of God and by faith act upon it be obedient. Our obedience puts our faith into action.

*

1 Tim 5:24,25    Remember that some people lead sinful lives, and everyone knows they will be judged. But there are others whose sin will not be revealed until later.   In the same way, everyone knows how much good some people do, but there are others whose good deeds won't be known until later.

Rev 14:13   And I heard a voice from heaven saying, "Write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from all their toils and trials; for their good deeds follow them!"

*

JESUS WILL REPAY ALL ACCORDING TO THEIR DEEDS

Mat 10:40-42  He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.   He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.  And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

*

Mat 25:33-40  And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:  For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:  Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.   Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?   When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?   Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?   And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

*

Rev 22:12 - 14     "See, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me, to repay all according to their deeds.     I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."  Blessed are those who wash their robes so they can enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life.
