SABBATH = The day of rest, God rested on the
seventh day after creation and is a sign of the covenant
relation between God and His people the Jews and is the
eternal rest He has promised.
The Sabbath was made known to Israel
and made a commandment at the giving of the law
Exo 20:8 - 11
"Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Six days a week are set apart for your daily duties and
regular work, but the seventh day is a day of rest
dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your
household may do any kind of work. This includes you, your
sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your
livestock, and any foreigners living among you. For in six
days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and
everything in them; then he rested on the seventh day.
That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it
apart as holy.
The REASON for THE SABBATH Was ?
Gen 2:1,2 So the creation of the heavens and
the earth and everything in them was completed. On the
seventh day, having finished his task, God rested from all
his work.
AND IT WAS A SIGN OF THE COVENANT
Exo 31:13 "Tell the people of Israel to keep my
Sabbath day, for the Sabbath is a sign of the covenant
between me and you forever. It helps you to remember that
I am the LORD, who makes you holy.
The Sabbath was in force from Moses until the law was
fulfilled by Jesus.
Luke 4:16 When Jesus came to the village of
Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the
synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the
Scriptures.
We see the custom of Jesus was to observe Saturday the
Sabbath as a day of worship in the Jew’s church, which is
called a synagogue, but His failure to comply with the
tradition’s and rules brought conflict.
Mat 12:1 - 13 Jesus was walking through some
grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, so
they began breaking off heads of wheat and eating the
grain. Some Pharisees saw them do it and protested, "Your
disciples shouldn't be doing that! It's against the law to
work by harvesting grain on the Sabbath." But Jesus said
to them, "Haven't you ever read in the Scriptures what
King David did when he and his companions were hungry? He
went into the house of God, and they ate the special bread
reserved for the priests alone. That was breaking the law,
too. And haven't you ever read in the law of Moses that
the priests on duty in the Temple may work on the Sabbath?
I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the
Temple! But you would not have condemned those who aren't
guilty if you knew the meaning of this Scripture: 'I want
you to be merciful; I don't want your sacrifices.' For I,
the Son of Man, am master even of the Sabbath."
Then he went over to the synagogue, where he noticed
a man with a deformed hand. The Pharisees asked Jesus,
"Is it legal to work by healing on the Sabbath day?"
(They were, of course, hoping he would say yes, so they
could bring charges against him.) And he answered, "If
you had one sheep, and it fell into a well on the
Sabbath, wouldn't you get to work and pull it out? Of
course you would. And how much more valuable is a person
than a sheep! Yes, it is right to do good on the
Sabbath." Then he said to the man, "Reach out your
hand." The man reached out his hand, and it became
normal, just like the other one.
So we see that Human need has precedence over ritual
law. Mercy, not legalism, is the heart of God
We are to do good and be merciful.
Luke 6:45 A good person produces good deeds from a
good heart, and an evil person produces evil deeds from an
evil heart. Whatever is in your heart determines what you
say.
The Lord’s
day
The Sabbath was never given to the Believers the body of
Christ, the church but The Lord’s day was given to
commemorates the resurrection of Jesus.
Mark 16:9a It was early on Sunday morning when
Jesus rose from the dead ...
The Lord’s day began in the time of the apostles and
will be observed until the Lord returns.
At first, Christians also met on the Sabbath with the
Jews in the synagogues to worship Jesus.
Acts 20:7a On the first day of the week, we
gathered to observe the Lord's Supper.
Rev 1:10a It was the Lord's Day, and I John was
worshiping in the Spirit.
Acts 13:14 But Barnabas and Paul traveled inland to
Antioch of Pisidia. On the Sabbath they went to the
synagogue for the services.
The Sabbath A shadow of Christ
The Sabbath and other matters of the law are viewed as a
shadow of the reality of the redemption work of Christ on
the cross.
(1) The Sabbath became a symbol of Salvation
(2) We enter in to rest from our works
(3) The kingdom of God setup on earth, the rest
to come.
Col 2:14 - 17 God canceled the record that
contained the charges against us. He took it and destroyed
it by nailing it to Christ's cross. In this way, God
disarmed the evil rulers and authorities. He shamed them
publicly by his victory over them on the cross of Christ.
So don't let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink,
or for not celebrating certain holy days or new-moon
ceremonies or Sabbaths. For these rules were only shadows
of the real thing, Christ himself.
Jesus fulfilled the Jewish regulations and celebrations,
they were a pitcher of Jesus, pointing to him.
Like as Sunday and the Lord’s supper are looking back to
Jesus death on the cross till he comes back.
A
Sabbath-Rest for the People of God
Heb 4:4 We know it is ready because the Scriptures
mention the seventh day, saying, "On the seventh day God
rested from all his work."
Heb 3:12a,
14,15,18,19
Be careful, dear friends. For if we are faithful to the
end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first
believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. But
never forget the warning: "Today you must listen to his
voice. Don't harden your hearts against him as the ones
Moses led out of Egypt did when they rebelled." God vowed
that they would never enter his place of rest? He was
speaking to those who disobeyed him. So we see that they
were not allowed to enter his rest because of their
unbelief.
The rebellious generation did not enter into the
Promised Land because of a lack of faith.
We enter rest by faith in the gospel, giving up our
works as the way to salvation. This salvation rest will be
fully realized only in the resurrection life.
God has prepared a place of rest
Because distrust kept Israel from obeying God, the
people were unable to enter the Promised Land. They never
knew rest from their wanderings in wilderness. And they
died there.
How does this apply to us? Heb 4:1 - 3, 7 -
11 says
God's promise of entering his place of rest still
stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you
might fail to get there. For this Good News--that God has
prepared a place of rest--has been announced to us just as
it was to them. But it did them no good because they
didn't believe what God told them. For only we who believe
can enter his place of rest. As for those who didn't
believe, God said, "In my anger I made a vow: 'They will
never enter my place of rest,'"
So God set another time for entering his place of rest,
and that time is today. This new place of rest was not the
land of Canaan, where Joshua led them. If it had been, God
would not have spoken later about another day of rest. So
there is a special rest still waiting for the people of
God. For all who enter into God's rest will find rest from
their labors, just as God rested after creating the world.
Let us do our best to enter that place of rest. For anyone
who disobeys God, as the people of Israel did, will fall.
Today is Salvation
Another day of rest is
the Kingdom
Only eternal things will be left
Heb 12:25 - 28 See to it that you obey God, the
one who is speaking to you. For if the people of Israel
did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the
earthly messenger, how terrible our danger if we reject
the One who speaks to us from heaven! When God spoke from
Mount Sinai his voice shook the earth, but now he makes
another promise: "Once again I will shake not only the
earth but the heavens also." This means that the things on
earth will be shaken, so that only eternal things will be
left. Since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be
destroyed, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping
him with holy fear and awe.
Heb 3:1 And so, dear friends who belong to God and
are bound for heaven, think about this Jesus whom we
declare to be God's Messenger and High Priest.
We are to come to Christ as obedient children and are to
be thankful to him and pleasing him in worshiping him with
holy fear.
SO LET US WORSHIP HIM
